Re: Toilets in the USA
Funniest thread for a long time
One thing I do like about most American public "bathrooms" is when they have the toilet seat covers. Realistically it's probably more of a placebo effect than an actual barrier against germs but comforting nonetheless. I also prefer the paper towels - even the turbo hand dryers (Dyson etc) are a waste of time.
Oh and closing the lid? If I can stand next to the toilet while it flushes and get splashed then that's good enough reason for me to close it, Mythbusters or not (who I suspect used an American toilet which - as we are so enlightened now - flushes differently).
Oh, and watching yet another tourist holiday horror program on TV the other day, somebody measured the contamination level in the sink, bedside tables, and the glass tumblers (for drinking from) to be 10-60 times dirtier than the toilet bowl! I vaguely remember Mythbusters doing something similar with their own toilet and getting similar kind of findings.

Re: Toilets in the USA
I like the way Americans actually use the toilet.
I have too many memories of
a) Cheap Indian restaurant bathrooms in England when, rather than wait, some drunk will piss in the sink.
b) Pissing on the terraces at the footy (QPR used to have piss dripping down from the upper tier on to the lower)

Re: Toilets in the USA
You should see the public loos in Romania and Bulgaria Nothing more than a hole in the ground, and as for those in Egypt and Libya.....there are no suitable words to describe their horror.

How does a disabled person use them? In the US (maybe local requlations) large companies are required to provide an extra large stalls for the disabled.

Re: Toilets in the USA
Most modern places have a disabled loo with all the disabled attachments like handrails etc.
BUT - it's usually always locked so you first need to go to the front of house and ask for the key. The one in the airports is not locked by a key but it's usually occupied by piss needy tourists that have just got off the plane.
I guess the disabled avoid older wine bars and dirty old trattorias. (Or think of another way out).
