Instructions for Form W7 say 800-829-1040 or 215-516-1171.

I sent the application on 10-22 certified mail. I received return reciept showing IRS
picked up their mail 10-29. I waited until the end of December and began calling the
above numbers. The 800 number is a general voice-menu number. I found that if you
take the option to inquire about the status of your tax return, and repeatedly key in
an invalid SSN (just hit the # key) it will transfer you to a live person. The live
person(s) kept telling me they didn't have any information about ITIN and kept
sending me to the toll number which supposedly goes to the ITIN center. The ITIN
number was always busy or they told me I had to call the 800 number. After 4-5 days
of this, I spoke to someone at one of the numbers (forgot which one, but I think it
was the toll number) and when they told me to call the 800 number I politely told her
I had been doing this for days, all I wanted to know is if they received the
application and if it was in progress, they didn't have to tell me the issued number
over the phone (they made a point they couldn't tell me because it was for my wife).
I told her I was reaching the point I needed to speak to a supervisor or would have
to start pursuing it with my representative in Congress. She went away and came back
to tell me she found the information in the computer. She asked me for a lot of
verification to prove I really was the one who mailed in the application (read back
to her information on the application). She then told me the number that was issued
for my wife.

Sorry for the long story. Just wanted to prepare you for what you may face.

thanks

I sent off my application for the ITIN on the 14th March - we rang and were told it would be under 30 days, but I have my interview on the 3rd of May so now its a race against time so I can get my ITIN number in time to file for my husbands tax ( he has an extension) I rang the embassy and they said bring a signed letter from my husband and it may be overlooked - but I doubt it

Thanks Gillian for posting that! It gives me hope. We are waiting for our interview
date. Sent in packet 3 on 3rd April so hopefully should get packet 4 shortly (all
being well- fingers crossed).

I am also waiting for an ITIN number. The Embassy told me it takes 10 weeks to
process (I submitted mine on the 13th Feb and am still waiting to get mine back).

Good luck.

well i rang the IRS today - and it should take 30 days for a number - not 10 weeks - dont worry - I have a problem with my ITIN application, I was told to send in another copy as the first was lost - but apparently it wasnt and now I am twice on their system and it is delaying my applucation - anyway

does anyone know what happens if you go for your interview without your last tax return?

Good luck

I believe you can file single and if anyone asked why you did, you can say you had no
identification number for your spouse and you intend to file an amended return (I
suppose filing status is amendable). (Again, pub 519 doesn't speak in terms of
requiring filing married when the spouse is a non-resident alien residing outside the
country. It speaks of the conditions by which you may file married, or claim the
person as a dependent. As far as I could ever tell, there's no requirement to file
married or claim the person as a dependent under this circumstance)
