So for America, that is a radical proposal even though I think employer provided should be eliminated but not through tax credits but instead government supplied universal health care.

Eliminating employer provided heath care (whether from the right or left) would be considered as radical as if a UK politician from a major party proposed eliminating the NHS which they would never propose no matter how far right their beliefs are.

Only politicians such as Ron Paul (if he were elected) would try to push his radical ideas through but even the republicans wouldn't vote for many of his ideas.
Hmm. I wonder if many Americans were voting for him because of his experiences & behaviour in Vietnam. It seems that since about the mid 80s his positions and behaviours have been less commensurate with a truly top bloke, perhaps as he became more tarnished by being in Washington etc... Now I think he's just a crazy old coot... sometimes he's right on, but not consistently so - tends to make him look like a right old opportunist (surely not?!)...

I must admit that my views on McCain have indeed been coloured by the film Palin... I think he is quite old fashioned in his views towards women.

I think he belongs to a different era, and is infact an idealist, a Romantic. Unfortunately ideology and economics do not always make good bed-partners...

McCain was very well respected by independents and the democratic party for crossing party lines when laws benefited the country but after he was basically swift boated by the right in the 2000 republican primary , he learned his lesson in 2008 and moved to the right during the 2008 primary. Then when he was challenged by the Tea Party in 2010, he moved very far to the right from fear of losing his job. Now his voting record has a conservative rating of about 98% which is among the highest as compared to about 65% in 2000. So now he has become just another crazy old coot.

I respected McCain in 2000 and thought about voting for him in 2008 until he lurched to the right. Now he's not just a crazy old coot, he's a bitter crazy old coot. I still don't think he's come to terms with losing to Obama.

Healthcare has to be divorced from employment.

How about bringing back Conscription with successful completion coming with lifetime VA provision?

Everybody happy.

How about we stop going to war and invest in space exploration instead? Trust me, it'll be worth it. It seems that us humans have lost the art of being the "explorers" that once helped advance us as a species. We're so pussified now that we send friggin' robots to Mars.

Although there hasn't been many moderates (with the exception of a few New England moderates) in the republican party once it was made clear by the far right that any legislation proposed by Obama has to be opposed.

Lately a few have come out of the closet for compromise such as Corker, Graham, Chambliss (but had to apologize to Grover Nordquest), and Peter King. Actually there are still quite a few more that used to be moderates in the republican party but if they don't also come out of the closet, the above 4 will likely be going the way of Lugar.

I don't think we've lost the art, we humans... The non-humans who seem to be in government are the ones without the vision, spine, etc etc

Good point. Investing in space research is the only way that the States can attempt to remain a major power.

A revolution is long overdue. Are you up for it?
