Default Thule Bike Rack

We are moving to CA in February and I am a cycling nut. Fortunately I have most of my relocation expenses being met by the company so my bikes get to come with me.

I have a pretty new Thule bike carrier (EuroClassic G6 LED 928) that fits a standard UK towbar and has adaptors for various electrical connections.

My question is will my carrier work with a US towbar and electric connections and be worth transporting or do I need to sell and buy a new one when I get there?

Thanks

The electrical harness I'm guessing is pretty standard and would probably work.

Whether the carrier is legal in the state may or may not be a issue though, as some states have differing rules about the types that hang off the back of a car. I've no idea what they might be for CA.

If the company is willing to pay shipping though, go for it.

No idea about the bike racks here but http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures...cts/ffdl37.htm might be useful as there are some differences to using lanes and things from the UK.

UK and US electrical connectors are different (UK round / US straight - see pic) but if you have adapters I'm sure one will work.

Sorry, don't know about the Electrics(neither of my racks have electrics) but just wanted to give you a heads up on cycling gear... it may be worth stocking up on basics before you come as its pretty pricey here, in Texas at least. If I have time, I order mine from Chain Reaction in the UK and get it shipped over and it is still significantly cheaper. Recently got 2 Continental gatorskins, a pair of gloves and 2 tubes from chain reaction for slightly more than the price of 1 tire in the local store....

Local shop prices are generally pretty ridiculous but online retailers are pretty reasonable.

Also, I have no idea why they charge so much for Contis in the US. The GP4000s is routinely priced at $65, which is outrageous. Michelin, Vittoria, Schwalbe, Vredestein etc are generally priced much more closely to European prices.

Have you got any recommendations for decent online sellers over here? I've never really looked too seriously for any, because Chain Reaction have always been good.

what will you be driving when you get here?

most vechicles are big enough to fit the bike inside or on the roof.
i would bring it anyway.

You might want to email uhaul and ask them about compatibility though. www.uhaul.com

Don't forget that US tow balls are Imperial (sorry, SAE ) so come in 1.75", 2" etc diameter. Will the connector on the bike rack deal with differing sizes of tow ball?

US wiring has either 4 wires or 7 - your rack comes with 13 connectors, so not sure how easy it is to adapt - see here for a quide to the wiring over here.

Maybe an email to Thule might be in order?
