Thought getting the visa would be the hard bit but ....
 

Recently hubby had a successful eb1a petition based on his experience in a leading global hr role. We thought that was going to be the hard bit. Now after sending off endless resumes for roles that he could easily do, they seem to be going into the black hole that is online recruiting with no responses. Finding it all very frustrating and disheartening. With both of us having a HR background, we know that here applications for these senior roles would be acknowledged but it doesn't seem to be the US way.

Has anyone any advice on how to 'work' the online system? Anyone out there looking for an award-winning global head of total reward?!

Automated filtering is used here a lot apparently. I'd state "fully authorized to work for any employer" early on, as well as "Visa EB1A: Alien of extraordinary ability" and hope somebody human spots it.

Despite your husband's "extraordinary ability", there is a general tendency to not value foreign (non-US) experience and qualifications as highly as US experience and qualifications, or indeed just to ignore them entirely.

Also, it sounds like you might be outside the US? ..... There is an oft-reported problem, that US businesses won't respond to someone outside the US even if they are a returning US citizen with some US work history and a SSN already assigned. I certainly had no success whatsoever in getting substantive interest i.e. interviews, until I was actually in the US, albeit just for a visit. Spoofing a US presence might help, by registering a US VoIP phone number and a "street address" to put on his résumeé by signing up for a mailbox with The UPS Store with mail forwarding service (they use a street address, then use "Apt ___" or "Unit ___", instead of "PO Box"), but he'll need to be prepared to book a short notice flight to hurry to the US if called for an interview.

And one more thing, for senior or specialist roles, recruitment is still often done using recruitment and search agents, so if he hasn't contacted specialist HR staff recruiters he should do so.

You'll be lucky to hear back...even after a interview you might not hear back.

Best way is through a introduction, as always....so network. You're in HR and recruitment, you should know this.

LinkedIn and hit it hard.

You've just got to be a bit more blatant and sell yourself more here but the principle doesn't change all that much.

Yeah, I am more than a little confused by this post. An HR "world expert" complaining about (A) not hearing back and (B) the uselessness of online applications. :rofl:

Black hole of online recruiting? Yes, that about describes it and unless you have some sort of exceptional skill or fit the requirements perfectly, it's tough.

And don't mention the visa.

Also, many companies use psychometric evaluations these days.

In general, senior-level jobs in the US are obtained through personal networking and lots of coffee meetings. Applying online is a waste of time (IMHO.)

It also seems that companies don't hire applicants who are not already living in the employer's city; Unless they are some superstar the company is attempting to snare. How to be that superstar? See point 1 above.

Not really. Bit sorry for OP for walking straight into it, but HR (especially, but not exclusively, in the US) have a similar level of respect among the masses as estate agents and used car salespeople.
