Since when did anyone add water to UK Heinz soups? Is it a condensed version of tomato soup?

Our local Stop and Shop has Heinz tomato soup in the international isle but you pay through the nose for it. The Progresso is a reasonable price cos it's not an exotic import.

You can also buy some Heinz soups through The Vermont Country Store, not cheap but if you must have some.

Maybe someone should start a thread of substitutes and we can pass on what is a near as damn it is to swearing to something we used to get back in Blighty.

Anyway, today I made a discovery: I found Progresso Vegetable Classics, Creamy Tomato to be quite close to Heinz (except with a few bits of whole tomato). I was tucking into half the can even before I heated it up!

I lurve tomato soup ...not the creamy though , Progresso has another "classic " I think, no fat and tastes better, Campbell's used to have a pour and serve tomato soup (not the 'orrible add water variety) I loved it...now I can't find it any more....this typically happens when I find something I love...

We could get heinz tomato soup at the brit shop if we sold one of the kids to afford it...
I hated the Campbells condensed tomato soup until I tried it adding 3/4 milk to 1/4 water... It was nice and very close to the heinz.... Have a try, not a lot to lose.....

Oh and the cheese on soup thing in the USA.... I have bought it back to the UK... Even better with croutons... LOL

I'll give that a try. My husband hates Campbells and Heinz is just too expensive to afford for only special treats. Who would think a tinned tomato soup as a special treat?

For the price you'd pay at the English Shop

Chop and fry an onion with a little olive oil till soft
Cover couple of pounds of good fresh tomatoes in boiling water, leave for a few mins then peel skin off tomatoes
Add tomatoes to onions
Add about a pint of stock, I use veg you could use chicken
Add salt and pepper to your taste
simmer gently till tomatoes have broken down maybe half an hour
Blend till smooth or just mash up

Put in a bowl eat with french bread

You will not want heinz again it is so easy less than 10 mins prep and delicous
I have no life but I make a lot of soups!

I agree, for a special treat I cooked hubby frog dans la oriface (toad in the hole) since good sausages are hard to come by and expensive. Without the sausage it becomes frog en vacance.

I tried the Campbell's recipe last night - he wasn't impressed with that either.
