Getting them “in the system” whilst under 16 is a genuine advantage. Beyond that it’s up to them whether they wish to renew.

It has nothing to do with needing a passport for travel, they have very recently renewed, US passports. The purpose of getting a UK passport is about getting them officially into the system and having it recognized on paper that they are UK citizens.
