Thinking about moving to Florida
 

Hello all,

I am 17 years old and will be going to university i Sept where I will be studying a degree (BSc) in computer network management and design.

I have been interested in moving to Florida for a couple of years now and have been gathering small pieces of information each day about visas and what not.

I am planning to go after I have studied my degree at around 20/21.

I have read the intro so I won't ask too many daft questions but here they go:

How easy will it to find a computer networking job with a degree, do they have places like "Job Centre" where you can go in and find a suitable job as easy as 1,2,3 or wut?

Are there any support groups who could help me settle in, advice for buying a house and legal advice like UK where we have citizen advice bureau...

If anyone could answer these two basic questions I would be grateful.

Another thing I would be interested to hear anyone who has or will be doing the same thing as me at "20". What problems did you have etc.

One step at a time. First, read:

You will be unable to take any action about getting to the US until after you have graduated (and you'd better get a first). Competition to move to the US is incredibly tough.

Probably best to revisit your idea of moving to the US after your graduate.

BTW, why Florida?

1. Yes I read that before, but I asked if they had job centre and citizen advice bureau.

2. I will be applying after I have got my degree at 20. Why a 1st? I have a friend who is currently out in Florida with 0 degree and 0 A-levels.

3. Florida because it's a nice place in many ways, It is cheaper to live, nice weather, 0 chavs...

No!! As an alien you will need to convince an employer that your talents are so good they really need you .. the competition is huge for H-1B visa
It will cost then $5000 plus to get you a visa ..and there is a vast amount of talent already in this country and half of India will also be applying for one of the 65000 visas available per year

No !! this is a capitalist country ..you pay for everything ...

wow, but could I not get a visa, mortgage and then find a carear job or does it not work like that?

You need the job to get the visa ....
At this time your chances are pretty much zero ...
Get some experience in your profession ....
and work for an International company who tranfer their
employees around the world ..

wow thats unbelievable!!

I think I will look until transfer as that seems to be my only option if what your saying is true...

Updated thread: So basically, marry a US bride and I get instant US citizenship and can get a job as normal without the visa bull.

Well!! not quite still take some years to get Citizenship ,...but marriage will get you a green card..and of course you start off with a Fiance visa ...

Ya I hear wut your saying... I was hoping it would be planned like this:

Move from UK.
Apply for perm residence in US.
Get US passport.
Put money down for mortage or rent.
Get a unskilled job to start off and earn a little cash.
Look for carear job in IT.
Get the job.
Get married.
Live happily ever after.

Isn't like that though from what your all saying... pffff

Very funny .... this is what you have to do ...

How to Live and Work in the USA
There are basically NINE ways that you can get a visa to live and work in the US:
(1) Marriage (or engagement in anticipation of marriage) to a US citizen.

(2) You have skills that are in short supply in the US e.g. scientific or medical training. A degree is normally a must. Or you have superior specialist skills with at least 12 years experience.

(3) You have an Employer who is willing to transfer you - but even the employer has to make a good case for you - so you have to be a manager unless you fall under category (2) above.

(4) You may get a Green card in the diversity lottery (UK citizens, except N.Ireland, are not generally eligible unless you, your spouse or parents were born abroad or held a different citizenship.

(5)You own or buy business (does not get you permanent resident status i.e. no green card)You must be a national of a qualifying Treaty countries
The business must have a minimum value of around $150k (more the better) bearing in mind you will need somewhere to live and with any startup business you will need at least 2 years living money as back up. So a figure of $350k would be a nearer minimum

(6)You are an "investor" i.e. you have at least US $1m in assets to bring with you. half of that in a few areas. And your background will be investigated to the hilt.

(7)You have a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister and no further) who is an US citizen who would sponsor you, approx time this take 2-12 years…

(8.The R1 visa is available to foreign members of religious denominations, having bona fide non-profit religious organizations in the U.S., for entering the U.S. to carry on the activities of a minister or religious worker as a profession, occupation or vocation

(9)THE UNUSUAL You are in a position to claim refugee status/political asylum. or You get a member of Congress to sponsor a private bill with legislation that applies just to you.
The S visa issued to persons who assist US law enforcement to investigate and prosecute crimes and terrorist activities such as money laundering and organized crime


Recruitment agent will not take you seriously if you are not already in the US. Writing for jobs is really a waste of time; likewise US employers have no idea what foreign qualification are or mean (except Degrees) it may pay you to get your qualification translated into a US equivalent, there are Companies that do this ..
But if you are getting a visa under (2) above then you need a job offer before you can get the visa. Your Employer will be your sponsor this will cost them upward of $5k. So you can see you have to be offering something really special to get considered They may also have to prove to the Dept of labor that there is no American who can do the job if the position is to be permanent
