It can become confusing in specific locations where the local section of the road does not run in the same direction as the overall road on which the number or name was based.

One of my favorites is Rt 28 in Massachusetts, which runs from Orleans on Cape Cod to the New Hampshire border. Between Orleans and Chatham, 28 North runs due south, and between Chatham and Falmouth 28 North runs due west. Not until Falmouth does 28 North go north.

I know, US-12 runs south-north through Illinios, even though it is an east-west road (Detroit - Aberdeen, WA). I-94 does the same.

I still find it easy enough to get around here though.

You could just apply to have your driving licence replaced with the DVLA if you needed it.

Both systems are easy though - you find out your exit numbers before you set off then you count off miles or sequential numbers until you get to the one you want.

Simples.

Exactly. If I want to know how many miles i've travelled I can look at my trip.

I'm not sure the reasoning behind that - both systems work pretty much the same way in that the numbers, by their own nature, are sequential however they are assigned.

I never take a long trip without learning my exit numbers first (even if I am using GPS) so I find both systems to be perfectly adequate.

Because I am quite happy with the current system the UK (and New England) has.
