Actually, one of those high schools is in my county and it IS a regular old high school!!! No college prep, no fancy magnet lottery! Go figure huh?!!

Lucky you. It still appeared to me that most of those schools were some fancy sort though.

I'm sure every state in the union has some good schools. But in some areas more than others, a parent would have to be very careful in choosing.

Before I'm considered a complete damn yankee - I don't think too much of the Chicago school system either. 'burbs are often ok.

For the OP, here is something from Florida, showing average scores etc. from various schools:

http://www.psk12.com/rating/USindexphp/STATE_FL.html

OK, with all due respect, those rankings are 3 years old. If you live here, we all know how bad our per student spending has been and how bad our teacher's pay is, but it is improving. Anyway, here are some current facts for the OP:

Now, I am off to change the baby's nappy!

Gainesville isn't 'that' rural it's similar to where I am. There are some counties in Florida where I wouldn't want to be just because they are so wierd and full strange people.

I understand they are 3 years old, that's why I specified that it was 2005. I spent a little time, but couldn't find a more recent version.

When I think rural and south I think racist, I think confederate flag on the big Chevy truck and a sign on the lawn quoting the 2nd amendment, I think of shotgun toting good ol' boys.

Someone please tell me I'm wrong as this image saddens me.

I am afraid that has been somewhat my experience.

The Chicago school system might do better without the white flight to the 'burbs.

Could be.

But you couldn't pay me to live in most of Chicago. There are reasons for the flight, unfortunately.
