Default And they wonder why they get unfit ?

It's a beautiful day here and I walked to the store with Sadie in the sunshine to get some fags and milk. Half way up the road a cop stopped and asked if I had problems with the Jeep because we were walking ? .... As I came out of the store a friend stopped and asked the same ? .... "No ! ... we are just walking as it's a wonderful day" I replied to both.
"JEEEZUS CHRIST ! .... You walked up here when you have a vehicle !" he said.
The store is less than half a mile away from the house. I laugh when I see such lazy people, I have even seen them drive down to the mail box at the end of their drive to collect the post.

Funny that you opened this thread the same thing was going though my mind yesterday.

I was going to the Wal-Mart and thought how I used to walk to the local shop back home for milk or the Newspaper shop for the Evening News etc.

Now I get my fat ass out the door and straight into the Jeep.
So I decided as its a bit of a hike to the store with the bags, from now on I am going to park further away and not try and fight for the first available space next to the front door, (well I am trying

Plus I miss the morning chats with the folks on the street on the walk to the shop and the chat with the neighbours in their gardens.

My MIL HAS to have a spot no more than 30 feet from the store or she gets into a tizzy! and as for collecting mail, she just left it sat in the mail box while me and the wife were away for a week! She drives past it twice a day on the way to work ffs! Trying to get her to go anywhere else is such a hassle we just don't bother anymore! But thats the way she wants to live, who am I to judge?

I never thought I would miss this particular thing but here goes. I miss going down to the local high street and having a different carrier bag from each shop. By the time you're done shopping you have no circulation left in any of your fingers! Then you either walk home, or to the car park (which is usually miles away and you could have walked home just as quickly!) or to the bus stop. Now that's a whole new ball game because now you have to balance all your bags on your lap and god forbid someone wants to sit next to you because there are no other available seats!
Very strange, but that's how you go about doing things in Britain, everyone does the same thing. Pretty much the only time you can drive to a store is if you're going to Tesco's or Asda's then you can park right outside.
Whenever I went into town like that, I would always feel the need to stop into greggs bakery and get a cheese and onion pasty or a sausage roll to eat on the way home, I needed to reward myself you see for lugging all that stuff about! . Oh, and if it rained while you were out, you ducked into a shop front with all the other shoppers until it stopped, Ahhhh memories!

Had a friend who was 20ish who had a permit. He was perfectly healthy to look at. He was constantly getting abuse by people who saw him walk away from his car. He was a recent heart-lung transplant recipient.

I hear ya & I used to do the same thing. Popping into town to do a whole list of things, park the car, walk to bank, deposit cheque, walk to supermarket, pick up some bread, walk to Coffee Republic, buy a hot chocolate with a shot of Cinnamon to drink & keep you warm as you shopped (or a nice cooling elderflower drink on the warmer days), walk to Gregg's for a veggie pastie/cheese & onion, walk some more just to walk. Then of course you stop for a chat every so often when you bump into an old friend on the way, oh how I miss it, I can't wait to move back!!!

Question Re: And they wonder why they get unfit ?

One of the biggest things I've noticed is that the old people here never seem to socialise in the same way they do in the UK.

In many (most?) towns in the UK the old age pensioners get their free bus pass at the age of 60 - and in the London area free rides on the tube as well. In my old home city, Coventry, the OAPs can use the buses any time after 9.30am for free and travel by bus and train anywhere within the West Midlands.

As you can imagine, at about 9.20am many of the oldies arrive at the bus stop and they all get chatting with each other whilst waiting for the bus and many friendships prosper in this way. I used to notice that on pension day (Thursday) many of the OAPs would choose to collect their pension at a city centre Post Office as they would all enjoy a trip into town and chat with their friends on the bus. My mum loves her bus pass and goes all over the place!

Whenever I go home to England I always see old people out and about doing their shopping, pottering about in their gardens or taking a stroll with their dog and I've rarely seen an obese OAP in England. I rarely see pensioners doing any of these things over here in the US....I don't know where they go or what they do?

Of course over here public transport is pretty much non-existant outside the largest cities or metro areas and you see very elderly people driving (when quite often they really shouldn't be on the road). Our town has some sort of bus service once a week to take the elderly to the local supermarket but I do get the impression that apart from their families many old people here are more isolated socially than their British counterparts.

Youre right It's lovely in Britain, especially in the summer to see the OAP's out and about. They do a lot of bus trips to the seaside and to the big shopping towns and they do make friends that way.

Yeah, I knew someone who looked perferctly fit, he had a disabled sticker along with someone else's heart. What I find annoying is when the 'disabled' person has caused most of their own health problems by being obese. How many disabled obese people do you see trying to roll out of their car, then waddle into the store?

or what about the obese people in the likes of wally world riding round on those battery operated trollies? Get up and walk more than a couple of feet a day, any excuse to sit down with some of them. Boils my blood sometimes! Fat F**king Americans, think they own the world (well what they know of it anyway!) and capable of doing it from their car or armchair!
