We went away last year to Yosemite, it was lovely and we had a big Thanksgiving buffet thing at the hotel. Its only 2 weeks before the in-laws come out for Christmas so didn't want to go away this year.
Since so many are liking my version of Thanksgiving meal, you're all invited to my place! :) Rene |
Re: Thanksgiving
Oh I love TG Day and all the house always smells so nice, my room-mate does all the baking I am able to put veggie on and deal with the gravy,Turkey etc but she does any baking, as I am useless at it and have no desire to learn when I can go to the store and buy any cakes etc that I need.
Don't know if its an american thing but not many folk seem to bake in the UK on a regular basis and personaly I see no need to either lol. |

How far in advance did you have to book the trip to Yosemite? I'd love to think about doing that next year! How was the weather? Was it crowded or not?

We walked up Yosemite Falls with light sweaters and a rain coat for walking under the waterfall spray. Needed to be wrapped up on a night though, hats and gloves. It wasn't too crowded, parking and shuttles were fine (we went at Easter and it was crazy busy). Its one of my favourite places, but we did get married there:wub: You may regret inviting us all for dinner, we might all turn up:) |
Re: Thanksgiving
Given Mrs Z's Hopi heritage she doesn't feel there is that much to be thankful for. As for me I'm rather apathetic towards it, it does feel rather like a prequel to Christmas though.
It's nice to get an extra couple of days off work, but we won't be cooking a turkey or anything special. Although after Rene mentioned Baklava, I'm tempted to make some of that, I love the stuff, but it just takes so long to prepare it. |

We booked late, late October I seem to remember. We couldn't get lodging inside the park so stayed at Tenaya Lodge just outside but only around 2 miles from Mariposa Grove.

I have a super quick easy recipe that takes less than an hour to prepare and bake, and tastes better than restaurant-made!! If anyone wants the recipe, PM me, happy to share it! You will need a place where you can buy the frozen filo dough, though...a Middle Eastern/Asian market of some sort...or see if your local Safeway (or other grocery store chain) has it, like mine does.

Re: Thanksgiving
I really can't be bothered with Thanksgiving to be honest. We have no family over here. I might feel differently if we did. The 2nd year we were here we invited another all alone foreign family over and had a good time. But not been to or invited anyone to Thanksgiving since then. Good excuse to have a lazy day with a bottle of wine.

This is only our 2nd Thanksgiving in the US, we don't have family here so will be spending it on our own.
Last night my daughters assignment was to write about what we will be doing at Thanksgiving. I'm sure she will get a few confused looks when she says for dinner she is having roast lamb and yorkshire puddings. How's everyone else spending the holiday, have you embraced it, and did it take you long to adopt it as a true holiday, rather than a good excuse for a couple of days off work? I embrace, every USA holiday, why not. When in Rome. Turkey, Cranberries, sweat potato, yams & stuffing. No pumpkin pie for me, hate the stuff. Reg. Frank R. |
Re: Thanksgiving
I'll be working on Thanksgiving day, the greed of some corporate monsters astounds me but people do still shop on TG day so they are vindicated.
Hubby and myself will be having dinner on Tuesday which is my only day off next week, it being just the 2 of us now we usually do steaks or such I still like turkey for Christmas Day which thankfully I do have off. |

I love Thanksgiving. Since I have been over here (came in April 2002) I have really enjoyed every chance to be with my new family, and have had something special to be thankful for pretty much each year (wedding, promotion, new job, Green Card, Natz, other stuff).
The total non-commercial nature of TG really pleases me. Plus we spend it with family in southern WA each year, so on Friday we can go to Portland and shop TAX-FREE!!! :) I watched a program on the History Channel Mon night about Thanksgiving. Well you'd think I would know all about it. Well I don't, and I learned alot. I'm not talking about the Pilgrims, I mean how the holiday evolved here in the US. |
