Default texas driving license for 18 yr old

website is clear as mud

18 yr old daughter has completed 6 hour online adult driver course and received the "texas adult driver education certificate".

What now? Can we take her out to practice driving in our cars? Does she have to go to a driving school? The website kind of misses out what happens at this point.

Anyone know what we're supposed to do?

cheers

looks like she has completed all that is required of her because she is an adult as far as drivers ed is concerned. All she needs to do is take the driving test, not the knowledge part as that seems to be cover by the 6 hr drivers ed course. Scary to think about really. Most kids here start their driving lessons the end of their sophomore year so they can drive themselves to school from Junior year.

My daughter was 19, nearly 20, when she did her test and then there wasn't even the requirement for 6hr online course then. She had 3 driving lessons with the local driving school, did the knowledge test and that was it! Her Dad had tried to teach her stick shift but he was too impatient and she was too nervous. That was the downside to driving school over here as none of them teach manual drive.

JJMB, can we just take her out in the car to practice/learn to drive tonight? We don't have to do anything else? She's just done the theory lessons not the driving school lessons.

The insurance will be really high though but remember to point out any awards she has from school, her GPA. Even the college she gets accepted to might bring the costs down.

She hasn't passed her test yet. I thought we didn't have to put her on the insurance until she's passed the driving test. All she's done is a theory course online

I think she has to get a learner's license now... they keep banging on about under 18s which is confusing. Can't they get their head around the idea that someone who is 18 may not yet have a driving license?

There is a learner's permit which allows to you practise driving before the test but there is no time limit on that as far as I am aware. In theory she could get her learner's permit this week and get her full license in a weeks time if she books her driving test the same time as gets her learner's permit. She will also need to on your car insurance before you can let her drive. She has to apply in person for the learner's permit so if those rules have changed, I am sure they will tell you. Last time I was at the Pflugerville DMV it was very efficient and you can book online.

Its changed a bit since my kids did all this and Elisabeth was the only one who didn't do the driving school stuff. They are much stricter with the 15-18yrs now and they have attend actual school to get a permit. So if your son wanted to learn to drive he would have to go to the school office and get an official form to say he is a good student with good attendance.
