Texanhammer on deportation
Hi:
OK, about those debts. If you walked away from unpaid debts in the UK, that generally should not result in immigration problems for now. Contrary to a a poster here, there is no "good moral character" requirement in immigrating. [At citizenship, there is such a requirement].
Do note that if the British Creditors get a JUDGMENT against you for the unpaid debt, it IS possible for them to "register" that judgment in a US court so that it becomes an enforceable United States judgment.
If there is some type of crime involved [and I don't know if there is, just saying "if."] -- do note that the UK and the US do have an extradition treaty.
To Rete -- there used to be a thing called "debtor's prison" which has fallen into disfavor. It is a interesting thought if it should be brought back. As a tangential aside -- gambling debts usually are not enforceable, even by civil action. This is true even in Nevada. However, Nevada has an interesting practice -- one who welshes on a Marker will be criminally charged with false pretenses and the DA will work out a restitution schedule for dropping the charges.

"Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?"
