Apparently the only legal way to import a non-US car is to have it shipped over as just a shell, ie, without the engine, then get the engine shipped over later. You can then register it as a kit car, therefore bypassing the DOT regulations. This is how many of the Japanese car enthusiasts import their Skylines and so on.

I know someone who did this with his German-registered Audi, and had no problems whatsoever, other than the cost of two expensive shipments rather than one.
