Default Telegraph Expat Article - Living in Cali

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/global/ma...california.xml

Thought it was quite interesting.

Mentioned something in regards to immigration also:

My parents had always wanted me to have the option of working in America and had arranged a Green Card for me at a young age.

This was an easier process in the pre-9/11 era, when you could spend large amounts of time outside the US and not lose your residency privileges.

Work and social lives tend to overlap much more here than in the UK because the emphasis on customer service and client retention is that much greater.

Surprising

The Telegraph has a big bee in its bonnet that the UK is so awful that everyone is leaving - perhaps the Tories have more sunshine as an election pledge.

That article is a dreamy pile of pants. "My parents arranged a GC for me at a young age....." - Yeah, right. I'd like to know how that's possible without living in the US, pre or post 9/11.....

Edit: I see the comment on the article from "FB" - now would that be our British Expats FB, perchance?

I thought the same thing. And he says at the start of the article that he decided on moving to CA during a snowy day in Manchester in 2004. Well, that's very much after 9/11!

As someone commented at the bottom of the article:

"My parents had always wanted me to have the option of working in America and had arranged a Green Card for me at a young age."

As the author will know only too well, this is not something that can simply be "arranged" just like that. British people do not qualify for the green card diversity lottery and are eligible only for a few restricted work visas generally issued only after employment has been found. This employment is usually extremely hard to get hold of as strict labour certification is required.

The author should not delude people into thinking they can go and live in California if the fancy takes them. Unless a parent or sibling in a citizen of the US, you have a low chance of success in this arena. Only a very few highly privileged or highly skilled people will get the necessary visas. Or highly rich, of course.

Aye, I think it's very misleading and I'm really quite amazed it got published. Giving people false hope and all.

Should we expect to see an increase of people asking questions about Cali here on BE in the near future?

Good find, it certainly does have some good points here, at least me me anyway.

Thanks for posting the article.
