technolog's questions regarding charge cards
I've done a bit of trawling, among other things looking at this thread.
I have had a Capital One Cashback card for 3 years or so which I've paid off in full every month and never been late paying. Am I right in thinking that this can be transferred too? If so, will this be a better option for me than an Amex card? Is there any merit in applying for an Amex card too? If so I'd want to have the Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card. Would that be a good choice and elligible for the global transfer program?

Since your question is specific to charge cards, I've separated it out from your immigration thread.

You're supposed to have an AMEX card for a year minimum before becoming eligible for the global transfer program. However, there are reports of others transferring with less than a year. If you get AMEX, make sure it's a "pure" AMEX card and not something provided by somebody else, even with an AMEX logo.

I think I've heard of a Capital One card in the UK being used to support an application for a US Capital One card (though not recently), but you'll probably need to phone and speak to a supervisor to explain your situation as it isn't exactly part of a "normal" application.

Capital UK is a separate entity to US and will more than likely do nothing for you.
AmEx is about the only one that will transfer the history and as you've got a year or two before moving, it would be better to get it going as the history will be the biggest impact of having the card.

Thanks for the replies all. I'll speak to Capital One to see what they have to say before applying for the Amex Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card. Any opinions as to whether this is a good card to get?

We opened our Amex in UK in Feb 08, used it once, and had it transferred when we moved in Jun 08. May be one of those occasions where it depends who you talk with on the day.

Re: technolog's questions regarding charge cards
What did the "member since" say on the US card? Was it the "correct" year or the one 18 months prior? I wonder whether AMEX in the UK fiddled the dates! But, hey, if it keeps a customer, why not?

Re: technolog's questions regarding charge cards
It says since 10, and I very much suspect AMEX in the UK did. I figured I had decent credit there, so someone in the call centre used their initiative. Well done them. This is why I didn't do it over the internet though.

Re: technolog's questions regarding charge cards
I've sent a message to Capital One about whether I can transfer to a US account when the time comes. I should get an answer in 2 or 3 days.
I've applied and been approved for the American Express Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card so I should have that in the next fortnight.

Capital One have replied, saying it won't be possible to transfer to a US account.
