I've been on linked in for a while also and never had any issues. In fact if you have a somewhat unique name it usually end up being the first entry under a google search for you which would be better than other random things that end up on the 'net imo.

As mentioned, there's pretty good control over what info you can share, so people even in your network can't see stuff if you don't want them too...

Apologies - I didn't know that - I was just going by my experience of having looked for/at various people and having found their career details on linkedin.

most leave it public to make them easier to find in an event a job comes up, but it's pretty easy to hide yourself if you don't want to be found...it's certainly one of the better networking sites...it's pretty good for recruiters too if they pay for the subscription services which allows more features...
