Default taxes in California!

Hello

Can anyone tell me please if taxes differ depending on where in California you live? We are just choosing whether to live in San Francisco or further down the peninsula in Foster City and this would be one of the deciding factors.

Thanks in advance!

What sort of taxes?

Sales taxes, property taxes, income taxes, vehicle taxes, gas tax?

Sales tax is the same, and income taxes too! No idea about the others x

Edit: I thought you meant throughout California, but you might mean between those two particular areas.

Sales tax varies slightly in different cities and counties (actually Foster City is 9% and San Francisco is 8.75%).

Property taxes will vary a bit depending on various local assessments that are added on to the base property tax rate.

However, neither of these are a significant factor in determining how much it will cost to live in a particular place and it certainly won't be a deciding factor between living in San Francisco and Foster City - that will come down to property prices / rent and the cost of commuting (and your tolerance for it).

The tax differences will be a minor rounding error compared to the housing price differences and commuting costs.

Some cities have an income tax. Not sure if SFO is one of them though.

I meant between those 2 areas.... But still wrong! I had no idea it was less in San Francisco!

Completely agree property prices will most likely be the deciding factor, though aren't they both hideously high!!

Hubby's commute costs $11 a day for BART and parking, plus petrol/wear and tear on a 16 mile round trip. Commuting cost is less than a similar length of commute in the UK!
