Tax requirements

Hello!
For somebody who was in the US for over 6 months in 2000, and earned some income on the
H1-B visa (Computers), what are the tax filing requirements? Should the person just file
the regular 1040 form, 1040-NR?
How about if the person is married and has a wife over, but the wife does not have the SS#
-- it is the new regulation that SS# is not given out any more, unless the person is
authorized to work in the US, which she is not...
Any pointers are greatly appreciated. Please reply to: [email protected]
Thanks!
Alex

You'd file a dual-status return. As far as I recall, you can use either form and have to
clearly mark it on the first page as "dual-status". One of the restrictions is that you
cannot take standard deductions; you must itemize.
If your wife is a non-resident, you will be treated as a single person for tax reasons,
but you may be able to take deductions for your wife as a dependent or something like
that. I'm not sure about the details.
Go to the IRS Web site and download the "tax guide for aliens" for more detailed
information.
