Default Tax on gift

Got a bit of a suprise this morning to find a bill from Customs & Excise for a watch that I received for Christmas. The tax on a $100 watch was £20.40! The present was sent FedEx and I was just wondering if anyone else had had any nasty little shocks and knew of any ways I could avoid paying for my own present?!?

Theres nothing you can really do about that, only the sender can help with customs friendly packaging. The only place I know, and have used, that has customs friendly packaging is DV-Depot
in Canada, they use FedEx and DHL and when I was in the UK I never got charged taxes. Unfortunately that doesnt help with anything other than DVDs!
