Tax claim for moving to the US

Simple (item type) tax advice concerning what, if anything, I can claim for in moving across to the US where we have started all over again.Thats if I can ? or is it best left to a tax professional.

Best left to a GOOD tax professional. I was told by an H&R Block tax specialist that the inclusion of job-related relocation expenses was not supposed to include international moves. I didn't trust him as far as I could spit.

Interesting, we used H&R Block as well a couple of years ago when we filed. They said the exact opposite and put in all of our international move expenses.

I don't think it matters - well it certainly isn't stipulated.

Just pm'ed you:

Just pulled my 2005 tax filing. I kept all receipts for the moving costs and showed them to H&R Block. They allowed us to put in $14,295 of moving expenses (on form 3903), since the move was > 50 miles :-)

The moving expenses included the complete costs for:

1. Shipment of dog and cat
2. Furniture shipment + packing fees

The only thing we didn't claim for was temporary lodging + food(couldn't claim for those)

H&R applied this fully to my 2005 tax year, so saved a bundle in taxes that year :-)

If you qualify - some of the deductible expenses are:

actual cost of moving household goods, personal possessions, vehicles and pets. Includes expenditure for connecting disconnecting utilites, packing and crating, insurance for transported goods etc. Also included is 'reasonable cost' of travel and lodgings.

If your employer reimbursed some or all of costs then obviously that will be offset.

Sorry Ray I misunderstood - yes it has to be work related. But he doesn't have to be 'sent' to the area to work. He just has to meet the work time requirement.

Moves to Locations in the United States

If you meet the requirements under Who Can Deduct Moving Expenses, earlier, you can deduct expenses for a move to the area of a new main job location within the United States or its possessions. Your move may be from one U.S. location to another or from a foreign country to the United States.

Good point! Same could be said if you move from the island Big Diomede to the island Little Diomede, a distance of just 2.4 miles but represents moving from Russia to the US

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Diomede

Little Diomede Island is located about 40 km (25 mi) west from the mainland, in the middle of the Bering Strait. It is only 1 km (0.6 mi) from the International Date Line and about 4 km (2.4 mi) from the Russian island of Big Diomede

:D

Now that would be some pretty scary and cold border hopping
