Tax - Cannot E File
 

This is a question for those who have a UK income source for which there is no UK equivalent of the W2 form to submit with the filing. Such as State or job pension.

Last year and again this year our CPA has said we have to paper file our taxes as we have no W2 equivalent for our UK pensions. I was wondering if any here who do their own taxes, I guess using Turbo Tax or similar, have E filed in these circumstances and if so have they encountered any problems?

This tax year (2012) is the last year I expect to have any abnormal income, an endowment policy this year, so if others have E filed using Turbo Tax etc I will seriously look at that next year.

There are some things that stop you from e-filing and if it's coming from the IRS then any program should flag it and prevent you e-filling. I had to mail ours this year, TurboTax wouldn't even give us the option to e-file because of the "issue" we had.

Looking at some questions on the Turbo Tax forums it seems that the program does allow you to e-file by completing a Foreign Employer Compensation form. That is for wages. So I wondered if I was understanding correctly and if it applied to UK pensions. Hence asking if someone here had experience of this.

Being pedantic, pension income is reported with a 1099-R, not a W-2.

We always use an accountant because of having rental properties. Last year we sold the last one, and owed a good bit of tax. I wanted to check the result by running it through TurboTax. When I tried to enter my British state pension it wouldn't let me do it. Looking online I see several people had the same problem. Anyone had success with this with TT?

Sigh, so I've just been told by our accountant that we can't e-file our return this year (always have in the past) because we have more than two Form 8938s to submit (as was the case last year). Is it me, or does the whole tax thing get more and more difficult every year??!! :cry_smile:

Not necessarily more difficult, but if you paper file your return gets seen and approved by a person every time. Hence my guess increasing your chances for an audit. Seems they are identifying more and more what type of return needs to be closely examined and making sure they catch them.

See similar thread I started, which I just added a comment on. I would say, you cannot efile .. because a pension is not employee compensation, so you cannot use the Foreign Employer Compensation form. Use Form 4852 instead.

See this TurboTax Forum posting, not the first answer, but the second very detailed one.. he gives good suggestions for filling out the Form 4852 as a substitute 1099-R for the British State pension. (However, his answer to Box 6 is obviously incorrect!!)

Note, he's talking about using TurboTax and filing the paper. Equally applicable for prepaing and filing by hand..

Thanks Robin, just what I wanted to know. Our CPA is pretty good at knowing these things, just I thought it a bit strange he was saying no e-filing and I hadn't seen it come up as a problem on this forum. Most things get an airing here sooner or later.
