Taking medications
Really hoping someone can help. We are emigrating later this year (provided the visas arrive!!) I take a fair bit of medication and wondered if anyone could tell me how much of my medication I will be allowed to take with me when we go?

Re: Taking medications
My gp gave me a 3 month supply so it gave me chance to find a doctor here and get settled. I suppose it depends how generous your NHS gp is feeling as well as how much you are allowed.

Thanks for the link. I'd read that but it didn't really make it clear I didn't think. I had thought I might be allowed 6 months supply, but maybe the 3 months is more realistic.
do I have to take them all in my hand luggage?

Anything I don't want to risk losing I carry in my hand luggage.

Re: Taking medications
I asked my GP for a 2 month supply, only because I had a lot spare already, got it no problems. In fact I didn't even see a doctor: I just wrote a note on the repeat prescription form (as directed by the receptionist) and handed it in.
Apparently I was supposed to declare it to customs... it didn't mention it on the form!

Re: Taking medications
Hope you have Health Insurance sorted out then - as prescription drugs are costly in the US. As is visiting doctors etc etc.

Yes, my husband has that sorted! We are moving to near San Diego - guess that's where you are!

Re: Taking medications
Just as long as the drugs aren't restricted, it shouldn't be a problem....but check the ingredients because even the same drugs from the UK/USA might have slightly different stuff in them that might cause issues.
Especially codeine related.

Re: Taking medications
So, unless you or your husband have a job to come to as well, you won't have a company group insurance plan in place.
Which probably means you will be applying for Private Health Insurance plans?
With you saying that you take a fair amount of medication, this leads me to believe you might have pre-conditions. Private health insurance plans look at these very closely and can refuse you insurance.
Are you sure you have Health Insurance sorted?
The fact that elder parents find obtaining insurance to be very difficult is one of the main reasons children don't sponsor them.
