Taking a dog as excess baggage
 

Does anyone know if British Airways will still allow a dog to go as excess baggage? If so, what is the process for making it happen.

when we moved over in 2005 we flew with BA from heathrow to oregon, with our cat & dog. BA had quoted us something like 800.00 pounds to fly them both cargo & wanted us to pay when we checked in at heathrow. we showed up with our suitcase & the dog & cat in their separate crates. when they weighed our luggage & crates BA told us as we had so little carry on that they could take both our pets within our excess baggage allowance & so we ended up paying nothing to fly them both over.:thumbsup:lovely!

....... we did nothing to make this happen, i guess we may have been lucky with a nice check in person. i don't know what their actual policy is...or even if they have one.

Thanks for the info. We've tried calling BA a few times, but cannot get a straight answer - at best they are vague, hence the question.

Maybe the dog could be hand luggage then? Will it fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you?

Can you make it sit still long enough to go through the x-ray on the conveyor belt?

Nobody has asked the important question - are you flying to the U.K.? If so, the answer is no, regardless of the airline. Pets can only fly cargo from US to UK these days. In the old days, I flew Suzy as excess baggage and I think it was $100. Them's wuz the days. :(

[OK, not having read your previous posts, but seeing you are in Essex, I'm presuming you mean UK to US. I don't know about BA, but did read just the other day that you can fly a dog as excess baggage UK to US ... but don't ask me where I read it or what airlines ...]

Actually that is how I took our cat. She was in a carrier that fix under the seat.

British carriers won't allow pets in the cabin...some US carriers will.
