Taking coins out of USA
 

Hi all, my 1st post.

Returned from North Carolina last year to M/cr (via Chicago).
Had a collection of about 30 state quarters as I am a bit of a numismatic.
However when I checked my 2 suitcases back here one of them had been inspected and the coins removed.
I must add that they were sellotaped up as a roll and attached to an ornament I bought.

I know there is a legal limit of $5 for taking out pennies and nickels in case I wanted to melt them down (how and why I would want do that is interesting)

However this surely does not apply to quarters.

Just wondered if anybody else has had items confiscated at customs.

I am going to wait until August when the the State quarter program ends then I will purchase all 100 from the Denver and Philadelphia mints.

Strange thing is : I managed to smuggle some frozen black puddings into the USA as I wrongly thought my American girlfriend might appreciate a bit of northern UK cuisine.
Perhaps unwisely I told her what it consisted of, anyway I enjoyed eating them on my own :D

Put them in your carry on luggage and see what happens. My husband brought in his extensive coin collection years ago and had nary a problem at customs.

I cannot believe anyone could concoct such a heinous crime and what's more brag about it on a message board!!
I refuse to be party to such flagrant criminality...

was there a TSA inspection ticket inside your suitcase?

if customs had taken them they have to give you a signed receipt for the goods they have confiscated.

Yes TSA ticket (Orange thing) but no explanation.
I originally thought what dh01447 thought (theft) but who would jeopardise their job for such a puny amount of money ?

Also AlienUK. a year or so ago my American friend sent me a parcel with goodies in it worth several hundred bucks. That never arrived either.
Unfortunately she did not insure it as it was an extra $100 and she trusted the US Postal system. Her daughter even helped her pack it.
I have seen them both and discussed this since as I pop back and forth as such.
Apparently it was lost somewhere between New York and London.

BTW Bob, the black puds were well frozen even when they got to NC.
It's cold at 38,000 feet :)

Can't understand why my American friends wouldn't try a bit even with mustard or apple sauce.
Should have kept my trap shut eh ?

Which reminds me...when I arrived in the UK a few weeks ago I couldn't open one of my cases. It has a combination lock which had not been set.

Turns out the TSA had searched my case and left their little note...then locked the bloody thing using a key. :eek: I never use the key locks and didn't have the keys with me. :mad: Thankfully my BIL managed to force the locks with a screwdriver.

That's a bit rough, I'm collecting those quarters :cool:

I bet the inspector just wanted to fill in the gaps in his/her collection.

they nicked an evening bag of mine last yr, no value to it, just it went with my outfit. i complained and got some compensation.....loads of stuff is nicked since the crazy ruling allowing tsa to have access to our bags with the owner being present. i don't pack valuables in my suitcase but that's not the point and tbh i'm more concerned about what tsa could put inside it :sneaky:
