Swearing on the "Holy Scripture"?

What does this mean to you? This came up in a Greensboro, NC, courtoom and is now being debated.

Does this mean solely the Bible? Can Holy Scripture include other Holy books from other faiths?

Why not do away with all the claptrap and just swear to tell the truth? Be much easier...

This is true but some people feel the need to justify their actions by including the religious bit...

Don't they give the option here of the Oath or Affirmation like they do at home?

Me too, not that I was that bothered, school did the same.

I am sure that if it is allowed there will be some additional variations that will come up, just too tempting...

Well I wasn't to impressed by it, but I wasn't about to kick up a fuss for something so trivial...should have done though looking back because I still haven't gotten my greencard :D

Hmmm, what could atheists use? Hawking's A Brief History of Time? Monty Python's The Meaning of Life? Douglas Adam's Life, the Universe and Everything?, Darwin's Origin of the Species? Einstein's E=mc^2?

The Meaning of Life, definitely.

So, if a non-believer such as myself is made to swear on a holy book, does that mean that the oath is invalid and in fact I'm not obliged to tell the truth?

In a UK court you heathens would say:
I swear or affirm that the evidence you are about to give is “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

They've removed the Almighty God bit at the beginning then?

I've sworn to lots of things in this country, and I think they all involved god - and possibly a flag, but I can't remember.
