Question "Sucking Fingers"

Hi there,

Okay, I'm not putting any one down, just need some opinions on this subject..here it goes:

Does any one know why the British suck their fingers between and after meals?

I find that absolutely disgusting! Is it just me or am I being intolerable?

I have to admit that my hubby did it a couple of times during our meal at home and I said "ewww, please don't do that!" He said that the British do that.

My step-daughter is 15 and she does it too ...sometimes not all the time during a meal at home. Do I tell her not to do it too? OMG it sooooo bugs me!

I saw one of the characters on Eastenders do it and hubby said see us Brits do that.

I still think it is bad etiquette...agree or disagree?

Oh btw, my hubby is an exec too LOL!

Warmly,
Cali

sucking fingers or indeed eating with your fingers isnt considered rude in the UK or for that matter many European countries. In fact it is considered good etiquette to pick up say a spare rib and eat right from the bone.
Something however which never fails to amaze me is the amount of Americans that eat with only a fork, if the food needs cutting they seem to cut it up first, as you would for a child or invalid, put the knife on the edge of the plate and simply use a fork. Of the two I would rather have people who show enjoyment of their foods by licking their fingers to people who are clearly unable to multi-task and use a knife and a fork simultaneously.

What's your hubby eating? Ribs or something just as messy? If so, I think that's quite fine to lick your fingers - I'm an Amer and I've always done that. Hell if I could everything with my fingers I probably would.

My Scottish fiance on other other hand, I've very rarely, if ever, seen him use or lick his fingers while eating. Which of course makes me feel uncouth and rude. LOL! But he'll get over it!

Isn't the KFC slogan "Finger Licking Good"
They're American right?!

Maybe it's just my wifes family, but I've seen more finger licking here than I ever did in England.

Personally, I find Americans that chew tobacco and spit it out and those that seem to urinate outside more disgusting than sucking fingers.

This is a southern thing, my father-in-law will actually get up out of his recliner, state he is going to take a piss and then work outside

Er......bathroom is the other way dude :scared:

Not sucking your fingers is like eating a donut and not licking your lips.

Have you asked your husband about this? What did he say?

You don't mention whether this habit occurs when eating particular foods or if he does this regardless of what he's eating.

I find that absolutely disgusting! Is it just me or am I being intolerable?
If you find his habit "disgusting", you should discuss it with him. I would like to mention that I find that Americans in general do not know how to eat with both a knife and a fork simultaneously. I am the source of some amusement at work because I always eat with both a knife and a fork (you'll notice you can eat faster when you have two pieces of cutlery).

/QUOTE]I have to admit that my hubby did it a couple of times during our meal at home and I said "ewww, please don't do that!" He said that the British do that. [/QUOTE]

You don't mention the foods he eats when he starts sucking his fingers. Some foods are best eaten by hand such as fried chicken, ribs, sandwiches, etc.

In fact, I've yet to see anyone, including Americans not licking their fingers when eating fried chicken, a food that Americans in the South consider their regional dish. I have been known to eat sandwiches with a knife and fork- only because they are so "overstuffed" that I can't bite into it.

My step-daughter is 15 and she does it too ...sometimes not all the time during a meal at home. Do I tell her not to do it too? OMG it sooooo bugs me!
This is something you have to discuss with your husband. You're the de facto mother now...

Quite right NC, especially about the knife and fork part, I have witnessed several times Americans trying to eat steak with only a fork they have to put one elbow on the table (bad manners to begin with) then they dig and dice using just the fork! looks totally retarded to me.
