Re: Stuff trashed by 'power event'
Thanks all for the responses. Still haven't got around to calling them yet, I really need to do that tomorrow.
I took the PC to work yesterday and tested it all with other bits and bobs....only the mobo seems to be fried, CPU and RAM all test ok, and the HDDs seem to be working. The PSU seems to test ok, but since the spike had to go through the PSU to fry the mobo, I'm not going to trust it and am replacing it also. I can't get the same mobo so had to get a different one and will have to reinstall. And yes, it's a shame I don't have an excuse to get an i7 and 12GB of DDR3.....

I used to install drop wires as it happens..... and self supporting aerial cables combined (SSACC), which I believe had a catenary, that you wrapped around the pole and banged a big staple in to secure . Amazing how useless information comes flooding back when someone mentions it...... Can you get my coat while you're in the cloakroom?

Okay, I got our coats, I guess we'd best leave before we get thrown out.

I needed to get repair estimates to support the claim and it did take a few weeks for the utility company to sort it out, but it was ultimately resolved in my favor. Definitely contact them about it, and make it clear that the damage was attributable to a power surge caused by their equipment.

You'll all find this latest development interesting. It was not true that they are responsible all the way to the meterbase (according to AEP). The lady I spoke to says they are responsible for the cable between the pole and house, then the homeowner is responsible for the cable from that point down to the meterbase, then the meterbase is theirs, then obviously from under the meterbase into the house is us.
It turns out that the guys who came and did the repair LIED on their report....they put that the cable repair they did was between where the cable attaches to the house and the meterbase, when it was actually between the house and the pole! So they lied to try and put responsibility on us! Crooks!
Their problem is that they shot themselves in the foot. Because it's a long cable, they didn't replace it...they patched it by crimping a piece on to join the cable back together....and the patch is clearly on the line from the house to the pole. I have photos with a red circle around the patch....ready to email them, when their 'investigator' calls me back....
