Student taking a year out in US

How would a student between high school and university go about spending his gap year working in the US? Is this at all possible?

Try BUNAC who are a non-profit student club, that offer work and travel programmes worldwide.
You can find their site at:

Hi Irfan,

What exactly do you want to do in the U.S.?

If you want to visit for awhile, just for fun, you may be able to get a B-2
visa. See http://travel.state.gov-
/visa;visitors.html
. However, when you
ask to enter the U.S. at the port of entry, the INS officer will decide how
long a visit you may have, and the maximum time will be 6 months. If you
mention that you want to stay for a year, you will probably be refused
entry, and will be sent back where you came from.

If you are from a visa waiver country (see above site), and you ask to enter
the U.S. without a visa, you will be granted permission to stay for 90 days.

In these statuses, B-2 or WT (waiver for tourism), you may not be employed.
