Duncs... I just stumbled on this....Moving "Violations"
|
Originally posted by Ben We moved one state NJ to NY and, given the choice, I would NEVER do it again. It was even a removal company that was a franchise of a big company and so had certain guarantees. It was terrible! They ruined our freezer, stole my daughters money (which was well hidden away and we found the box open inside a toy chest after they had gone!) and they were a day late. The driver wasn't qualified to drive:mad: It was a total sham and they wanted a tip! the move from UK to NJ would a piece of cake compared to the move through states!!! Cost us, if I remember correctly, $3,000 for a whole house but not a huge amount of furniture. Anyway, my advice to you would be either do it yourselves or pay a fortune to make sure eveyrthing is covered and you are using a reputable company that is not a franchise! We found there weren't many companies that were set up to go from state to state so if you have a long way to go you might find your choices limited. To be honest, if you don't have much stuff you are far better doing it yourself if you have the time. You have to remember that when crossing states to move, it is like moving country - you have to pay tax and the cargo has to be weighed so it works out very expensive compared to other types of moves. If you are moving a car, you sometimes have to pay additional taxes on it. Apparently it depends how far you are moving. There are ways round this type of thing and it has something to do with selling and buying your car back but don't know all the ins and outs of it because we never had the problem with only moving one state. I know friends who moved CA to NJ and they did this to avoid the taxes they would have to pay. anyway, sorry I can't give you any good removal companies and good luck in your move. |
I'm glad you have checked the car thing.
As far as the tax on moving, the company we moved with (and all the companies we got quotes from said the same thing) had to load up after they had weighed in. Then once they were loaded they had to weigh in again and the difference was written on our moving contract. The state of NY put on the amount that they will be paid. Maybe it was because of the size and amount we had that put us in this catagory. I'm afraid I don't know. These were all personal items belonging to just us. |
Originally posted by effi I guess where you live will depend on where you will be working. Trust me you don't want a long commute to and from work every day. The roads here in AZ are beginning to look a lot like LA, they are extremely busy and it does not seem to matter what time of the day you are travelling. AZ is the fastest growing State in the US at the moment. Mesa is ok, pretty central. Scottsdale (commonly referred to here as Snottsdale is very expensive) if you are planning on buying property there you had better be prepared to pay mucho $$$$$$. There are a lot of outlying areas around Mesa which are quite nice, but like I said, you don't want to be too far from work. During the summer months when the temps can reach 123° and you cannot hold the steering wheel cause you burn your hands, it can be a bit of a shit travelling. Right now the temp is 91°. Beautiful, these few months until about May make it worthwhile living here, then you have about 6 months of misery because of the heat. Good luck. |
Originally posted by Duncs I am not sure thats right. You have to get weighed at state borders in a truck but i dont know about a smaller van. As for tax you dont pay taxes on personal possessions you move around and i have already checked on the car the State of MA charges 5% sales tax but if you can prove you owned, paid tax and used the vehicle in another state for over 6 months then its tax exempt when registered 1st time in MA. That may change state to state but its taxachussetts and if they dont screw you for it who would? |
Re: State to State moves any experience?
Originally posted by Duncs I have been thinking about getting organised to move up north for college in the summer. I just wondered if anyone on here had experience in using a removal company or even Uhaul etc and could offer advice on the best way to move a relatively low amount of stuff from Jackson Mississippi to Boston? Costs an issue so low price is good. regards, Duncan The biggest problem we had with uhaul was packing it up - you really need to bear in mind how far you will be carrying stuff - we were in a 2nd floor apartment on the far side of the apartment block from the road where the truck was. It took us about 12 hours to pack everything from just a 1 bedroom apartment (although we probably had a lot of stuff). Lindsey |
Originally posted by effi AZ would for one. I paid $540 to register when I first moved here with a 1 year old Dodge Avenger and it goes down progressively every year as the value of you car goes down. I think we had 30 days to do it, cannot quite remember now, if you don't and have an out of State tag and you are stopped it is a hefty fine. An update: Actually wrong. Annual cost is $36 for registration, $30 for vehicle emissions safety inspection and excise tax levied by the city you live in at a cost of $25 per $1000 of value in your car. value is worked out on a scale from manufacturers original price then reuduced by a percentage for each year, ours is 4 years old so its 25% of retail price or approx $5500. So thats $5500/1000 x $25 = $140 (approx). Thats not to bad at all compared to the $190 we paid in Mississippi. |
to rockgurl and jaybob

Originally posted by jaybob Hi Rockgurl Been following your US experience coz my wife is with the same agency as you. She is waiting and waiting to sit her NCLEX, she has taken and passed her preflight. So how has the agency experience turned out? Are you taking some of the proceeds fron the sale of your house(Congrats) and buying yourself out of the contract? Or perhaps you would rather not say if they don't already know? Any advice? Oh we were seriously thinking of mesa or scotstown (SP?) what's it like? Hope I haven't hijacked the thread, I'm only new so don't anybody shout at me! Jaybob Hello mate. What can I say? The agency are a bunch of rip-off merchants, but they did at least get me a green card. I am at least here in America, although a thousand miles from where I want to be. It is a well-documented problem that they promise you one thing and give you another, but I say get the green card, get your experience and then get the hell out. Don't expect too much from them, and always plan for your future. Be one step ahead. Basically, I will make so much money from the sale of my house that I will be able to tell them to http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoti...ers/fing27.gif Scottsdale is lovely, but more expensive as others have said. Peoria is very nice, as is Avondale...lots of new houses. It really is cheap compared to the UK though. My boss has a huge brand new 4 bedroom house in Avondale complete with double garage and pool, and she paid about $320,000 for it, only about £160,000. I work and live in Central Phoenix, and live in a gorgeous apartment complex with pool, gym and movie theater...perfect for just little old me. If you're a family though, I would look at renting a house or apartment somewhere on the outskirts of the city, like Peoria or Avondale. Just a bit less crime there. I live in a gated community, and it makes you wonder why there are so many locks! The weather really is awesome at the moment. Weather Bug is telling me it is 93 degrees right now. Perfect blue skies and no wind. If there is anything I can advise you about, please don't hesitate to drop me a PM. Good luck! latone - congrats on the job. Again, if there's anything I can help you with do get in touch. |

Thanks for the input guys. I'm looking around and really can't see that I'd have much to take back with me. Just a computer, computer desk, 13" TV, a toaster and a vacuum cleaner, as well as some clothes. I'm beginning to think it might be better to send everything UPS, and/or drive my car back to Connecticut. It's hardly worth getting a moving company to shift 5 boxes. Has anyone ever sent anything big like a computer through UPS? It's got to be ok, seeing as they delivered it in the first place!

Hi I too am watching the posts regarding nursing placements with interest as I am with the same agency as Rockgurl and have just postponed my GCI because of lack of placements in AZ. Hope to be there in the next couple of months.

Latone, I'm really surprised they are struggling to find your friend a job in CA as all I've been offered and most of the people i sat nclex with is california.
