In both cities you will find parades and a festival day for every nationality, i.e. Stuben Day (German), Columbus Day (Italian), St. Patrick's Day (Irish), Jamaican Festival, Caribben Festival, etc.
Suppose that it is that the Irish are so proud of their heritage and so very new to the US in such high quantities that they all come out and celebrate.

That would be hilarious; after the lawn turns brown you could go round to their houses, knock on the door and complain that their lawns aren't green enough.

I was reading somewhere the other day about how St Patrick's day as a big pissup is pretty much an American invention: The article said that until relatively recently St Patrick's day in Ireland would be celebrated quietly: families would go to mass in the morning, have a big lunch together, and that was about it - most of the pubs and bars were actually shut on St Patrick's day. Can't remember where I read that and I stand to be corrected if the article was cobblers.
As for me and the Mrs, although we are both 0% Irish we will be celebrating St Patrick's day by going with some friends to the Nokia Theatre in Times Square, NYC, to see the Pogues!! the classic lineup!! Shane's not dead yet!!
There is a possibility some Guinness may be consumed.
