In both cities you will find parades and a festival day for every nationality, i.e. Stuben Day (German), Columbus Day (Italian), St. Patrick's Day (Irish), Jamaican Festival, Caribben Festival, etc.

Suppose that it is that the Irish are so proud of their heritage and so very new to the US in such high quantities that they all come out and celebrate.

And St Georges Day, St Davids Day, St Andrews Day.....?

Thinking of a little revenge on the HOA?

That would be hilarious; after the lawn turns brown you could go round to their houses, knock on the door and complain that their lawns aren't green enough.

Exactly, the Irish and the Germans have the highest levels of ancestry in the US

The Irish were persecuted when they originally started coming over, signs saying no blacks and no Irish

They deserve it - I might go to the Parade at lunch

Sneaky Friday lunchtime beer!!

I was reading somewhere the other day about how St Patrick's day as a big pissup is pretty much an American invention: The article said that until relatively recently St Patrick's day in Ireland would be celebrated quietly: families would go to mass in the morning, have a big lunch together, and that was about it - most of the pubs and bars were actually shut on St Patrick's day. Can't remember where I read that and I stand to be corrected if the article was cobblers.

As for me and the Mrs, although we are both 0% Irish we will be celebrating St Patrick's day by going with some friends to the Nokia Theatre in Times Square, NYC, to see the Pogues!! the classic lineup!! Shane's not dead yet!!

There is a possibility some Guinness may be consumed.

Not that many Irish around in Maine compared to well say Boston or NY, so don't know what the excuse is over here, but there's a few Irish pubs and B&B's,...mostly all shite though and just Irish by name sake and a splash of green paint...paddy's day, the whole place goes crazy...

I'd hate to be a septic worker on saturday havin' to deal with all those green turds
