Hi my family and i are relocating to the US next month with work.
I have a question regarding SSN numbers, what do I need to get one and also how long do they take to arrive or are you told stright away what your number(s) are?

and any other documents required.. it will be mailed to you

Wait about a week before applying .it takes time for the info to get to SS from Immigration....its pretty easy

If your wife wants one ..she has to get an EAD first ..

Children cannot get one

I actually got mine before getting my EAD - i was told this was the correct way to do it. I just filled in the form and went along with my passport and a copy of my husbands visa and acceptance letter - very very straight forward apart from the 2 hour wait

oh yeah - and boy do they get confused when you hand over an english one of those - i have never seen an amercian marriage cert but im guessing they are nothing like our beautifully written scroll sized ones

haha ye the guy was really confused with my UK marriage cert!!

We filled in the form and took all the immigration docs, passports and marriage cert - about 10 days after we arrived. Mine turned up a week later - hubbys about 8 weeks later!!!!!

Find out if your work are gonna pay you without the SSN - Hubby didnt get paid for 2 and a bit months after we got here - luckily we brought enough money to cover us but any longer and we would have been screwed!!!

Yeah my OH had to wait about 8 weeks - but company did pay him.. thank god!

Thanks for this info, the marriage cert is a good tip. But what is an EAD?

Your partner, on an L2 will have to apply for an EAD in order to work

get extra copies of your marriage certs and also order extra copies of the LONG form of the birth cerificate for everyone while you can ans its easy (can do it online). they come in very handy and its a lot harder to get them later on.

You should be able to go back 24hrs after your initial application appointment and have them print you out a sheet with your number on it, so you can at least start notifying some people of your number. My card arrived in the mail one week later.
