I don't think its a british racial slur because I have never heard of it and I am 100% sure that Spooks had any racial meaning, past or present the BBC wouldn't use it as a show title.

I don't get it either, why is a black person a spook? Where on earth does that come from

Its an American racial slur....not sure where the heck it comes from....as I said it is quite old.

I don't think that the slur used for people of Indian extaction is used here in the US-have only heard it in the UK.

Is was a fairly common expression in my youth...but have not heard it used for years nows... bit like the bogey man ..never heard that used for years either..

I wonder if this can be considered progress that we don't hear these terms much? Human nature being what it is, probably not, new ones get invented instead......... .
