Spelling ise/ize

Lots of people in the UK spell words like realise with ise, but did you know according to the dictionary, the official spelling is realize? Same for all ise words (should be ize). As Michael Cain would say 'not a lot of people know that!'
Or do they?

Both ways are acceptable according to my Concise Oxford Dictionary.
I used to work in the Editorial Deparment (Publications Division) of an American-based international research organisation. American English was used (and therefore the American way of spelling) in our publications. But in internal memos etc. British spelling was acceptable, and we (my British colleagues included) spelled words the way you describe as spelled in the UK. The point I'm making is that both ways are acceptable although the -ise form is commonly used by writers of British English...
