Default Sounding like a Yank

Well, I've been in the US three days now. And I just got accused of having a trace of American in my accent, whilst on the phone to my other half back in the UK.

:scared: OK, I'm doomed. :scared:

Have other people found this? I can see it happening, actually -- I'll go up to someone in a shop, ask for something, get a blank look, then say the same thing again, slower, taking care to use a more American rhythm, and only then do they get it.

Had similar problem's too, started using alot of Americanisms but the accent is still 100% English.

My accent hasn't changed (thank gawd, after 6 years), but my hearing has, I no longer pick up an american accent, but if I hear a english accent it stands out a mile.

I'd be only too happy to go to a yank accent from a scouse one.

I speak with a English accent. I don't try to pronouce words (wadder/water, budder/butter) differently and I certainly don't spell words differently. I do word subsitute though, elevator not lift, apartment not flat, trash not rubbish etc.

happens to me when I am in some places... I can, without realising it, pick up several accents, but some I can't -- notably the Scottish and Australian ones.

Same here. However, if I am talking to someone whose first language is not English (or 'American' ), I do try to speak more slowly and 'open up' my vowels just a tad.

However, I am quite sure I shall never manage "woadder"...

I find myself doing the same, using the American words that they know, but still with my very English accent.

I've been in Texas for a long long time now, almost 20 years; and I still have my English accent and if I ever start to sound like that then I know it's time to leave

If you're over here without other Brits to continually reinforce your accent it will slowly slip to some mid-Atlantic amalgam of English and American that is neither English nor American. Start preparing yourself to be viewed as a foreigner in both countries.

I encountered this with my electric provider.

Gives you options when you phone up and responds to what to say.

It couldn't understand 'my service' the way i spoke it until my Brit collegue told me to say it with an american accent

worst thing is it worked

Still speaking with an english accent although i did get accused of being Canadian the other week :scared:

Myself along with a lot others on here get the blank looks when you ask for a glass of water when out
