Smile Solution: UK auto insurance for US residents

After a lot of searching, I found that Temporary Car Insurance & Short Term Van Insurance - Insure Daily will provide auto insurance in the UK for expats living in the USA.

This is useful if you want to legally use a family member's car who has only one insured driver and you are not renting a vehicle.

Most of the temporary insurance companies allow EU residents, maybe Commonwealth, but not USA residents. There's no UK residency requirement for expats.

You do have to have a valid UK drivers' license.

Is it still valid if you're not a resident?

I have a letter from the DVLA that reads in part "We are therefore unable to reissue your British licence with a foreign address but your GB driving licence remains valid until their expiry date" [sic].

I keep a copy of that letter with my UK driver's license in case it should ever come in handy.
