Default Social Security or Tax ID for Spouse

Hi,

I am currently on an H1-B Visa and my spouse just came to the US on a H4 Visa.

Can I apply for a social security number for her?

If not, should I apply for a tax-ID number? Will that help in obtaining a State ID.

Thanks,
MC

I do not think your wife can get an SSN. In order to apply for your wife's
tax id, attach a W-7, an application for an individual tax id number, to
your next tax return and send them to the IRS's Philadelphia office. Do not
forget to send a certified copy of your wife's passport, too.

Sincerely,

Koshi
