Default Social Security with restrictions? Why not keep it this way?

Hello. I was reading Rene's experience with changing
her spouses SS card(sorry for all your heartake with that) and realised
I haven't change mine yet. My SS card still has the restrictions. Now,
my question is...is it realy necessary to change it and remove the
condition? Would it be a problem for me to keep my old SS and have the
GC as evidence that I can work?
On my SS it's incripted "Not work authorised". Isn't
this better in case let's say my SS card is stolen? Can you imagine the
look on a potential SS card thief's face when he would illigaly try
using my card to work and the employer would ask for an extra document
to prove he's allowed to work under that SS noumber?:). I don't mind
providing more doc info if i will be asked to, because i have all i
need...but someone who doesn't(like a thief) might be inconvenienced by
that:)
Just thought i'd bring another angle to this story. Am I
way off base here? Can I keep on going on my old restricted SS card?

thx,
mimi

You don't have to get a new one, but why not? It makes it easier when job hunting because you don't have to explain it away and scare people.

My "alien" husband never bothered to get a new SS card and it really has had zero impact on his life. We just got conditions removed so could have gotten a new SS card more than 2 years ago, but he's too lazy and so am I. He even got a new job last November but there were no issues with the employer.

For us it's pure laziness, not because we were thinking it would be smart to keep the legend on it.

Hi Mimi,

I don't think you are required to change the SS card, no. We never found time to do it until now, and now I'm almost sorry we did it after all. LOL But Sadegh's receipt did come in the mail today showing he applied for a new card, I guess it will come in the mail soon.

I like your theory about why it shouldn't be changed at all, it makes sense to me....after all, your green card IS proof of your work authorization!

Best Wishes,
Rene

You can apply for a new card by mail ; just mail form SS5 and your
green card to your local office.

Hi Rene,

I am happy to hear you got a receipt. That guy was realy
unprofesional to you(or maybe he just didn't know what he was doing)-
he definetly should have given you a receipt(like you said, you had
your husban's SS card after all). If he would have failed to send you a
receipt at home, things would have complicated quite alot. I
guess...how is it that they say..."It's all well when it ends well":)

best of luck to you,
mimi

Oh god. Would you really risk that? Send you GC in the mail and have them send it back to you?

Send certified copies of supporting docs with application - much safer and perfectly acceptable

So you're saying SS office would accept a certified copy of the green card, as an original document? How would you get a certified copy of your green card?

Finally, take or mail the SS-5 to the nearest Social Security office. Be sure to take or mail the originals or certified copies of your supporting documents along with the form. We will return your original documents right away.

Ah. I think they are referring to marriage certificates and birth certificates, which have an obtainable "certified copy", issued by the government. I don't think USCIS provides a "certified copy" of your green card. So you'd have to use the actual original green card. That's the way I understand it.

Ah thanks. I was thinking along the lines of a notarised copy of the Green Card.
