Default Social Security Question

My fiancée arrived on a K-1 visa last week. Today she went to the Social Security
office in LA (West LA Federal Building) and applied for her social security card.
The woman there told her that she'd have to wait 4-6 weeks before she'd get her
card. We had read others' experiences with the SSA and that they were able to call
the SSA 800-number within a week after they applied for ther SSN and get their
number over the phone (before the card arrived in the mail). The woman that "helped"
my fiancée said this wasn't possible because the form had to be forwarded to the INS
and approved or something like that, and she wouldn't be able to get the number
before the card.

We will be calling the 800-number to see if it's possible to get the number sooner
than the 4-6 weeks quoted by the woman at the SSA office, but wondering if anyone has
any experiences or advice on anything we can do to speed this up?

Thanks in advance, Jeff & Viviana

Don't bother calling Jeff, wait 10 days then walk-in and request a printout of the
SSN to apply for a DL.

I've got to do the same thing in about 2 weeks... What's a DL? And what is the
800 number?

DL is probably driver's license. The SSA 800 number is on their website

My K-1 fiancee went into the Social Security office, applied for a card, and got it
in the mail about 10 days later.

You should have also read that there are a number of offices that send off to the INS
and the suggested option is to walk out and go to a different office and try there.
Anyway, the card may arrive pretty soon anyway.

Andy.

I was able to call the SSA 800# two days after applying for my SSN and they gave me
the number over the phone, and the card arrived within 5 business days of me
applying... however, when I applied I had my EAD in hand to prove INS authorization
to work...possibly it's different for a K1. They CAN and DO give you the # over the
phone, though when you go to start work somewhere you need to show the physical card
as proof of legal status. Technically, someone on a K1 visa is work authorized,
(though most drivers licence places and SS offices are ignorant of this) whether you
got "the stamp" or not, which is why she was able to apply for the SSN in the first
place. Don't know why they it would take 4-6 weeks, since by then her k1 will be
approaching expiry and it seems pretty redundant to issue a card for someone AFTER
their visa expires.

Hi All!

Well in places where they might get a lot of fake documents the office might send off
to INS to verify everything, although they are only supposed to verify something they
suspect is fake. If the people in the Social Security office wanted to they could
call INS and probably verify it right away. Chalk it up to busy, lazy or both.

Check this out for procedure:

Yes, now that it's too late, I realize we should have gone to a smaller, less-busy
office to apply where they don't suspect everyone has fake documentation. It's too
bad because my fiancee already had a job offer, and will get another one in a few
days. Don't know if she can hold them off and say "the SSN's in the mail", but I
guess she'll have to try.

Regarding the comment about the DL (Driver's License) -- I read somewhere that
the need for a DL is not sufficient to request a SSN. Anyone else read/hear the
same thing?

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Hi All!

I was at Social Security just today and they have tightened the regulation for
issuing non work authorized SSNs. Now you can basically only get a non work
authorized SSN if you are eligible for some type of Federal benefit that requires you
to have a SSN, i.e. Social Security benefits.

Take care,

Mike

Or else come to "Terrorist Friendly Tennessee" where they'll give a driver's license
to anyone who breathes without a social security number. Since late last year, when
the law took effect, there have been bus loads of mainly Mexicans from every state in
the country. Now a TN driver's license is not recognised in some states as a primary
form of ID. What morons the state legislature in Tennessee is.

So, without a DL, how do these "Mexicans" get car insurance? Or, do you prefer they
drive around uninsured. I doubt the 9/11 terrorist needed a DL to do what they did.

What does having a SS number have to do with terrorism? You don't need a DL to board
a domestic flight, and, they had passports.

Most of the ones I read about in the public records published in the paper who are
pulled over by the cops don't have insurance.

Four middle easterners murdered a driver tester in Memphis a couple of months ago in
a drivers' license fraud scheme.

You have to have some form of ID. Some of them got their DLs in Virginia, where it
was even easier than in Tennessee. Virginia changed their laws on getting a DL and
made it less easy.
