Social Security number while EAD is pending?
Hi guys
A few days ago I got an appointment to visit the BCIS office to pick up my EAD. This isn't until next Thursday (18th Sept.) so I'm wondering if I can apply for my SSN now, seeing as SS office will check my status online. Anyone know if this is possible, or do they need to physically see my EAD? The sooner I can start work the better so I'm looking for ways to cut down on waiting time.
Thanks in advance,
Geoff

They will want to see the EAD before they even accept your SSN application. Once they make the checks with BCIS, things should progress quickly as you'll already, hopefully, be in the system.

Thanks Cypher, I thought that would be the case!
I hear that, if you are validated on the system, you can call Social Security and get your number within 2 days rather than wait 2 weeks for the card. Hopefully this is true. Anyone have expierence with this?

We applied for the SSN once my wife got her EAD. We went to the office, filled out the paperwork and were told that it would come within 2 weeks. We waited for a week or so and then called up the office just to see if things were progressing.
We called the main office and found out that there was no application for my wife in the system. She then returned to the local office and asked them to check on the application, and it turned out that it wasn't entered into the system properly. This was quickly fixed and she was asked to check up with the main office within 3 days. She called and indeed everything was fine, and they gave her the number over the phone.
A couple days after, the card showed up in the mail.
So if everything is entered properly, it will be very quick to get the number.

Hi All,
Not anymore. You just have to hope the card arrives in the mail or go into
a SSA office to get your number. You can try asking them to call you once
the SSN has been assigned when you apply. They are supposed to if you
ask.
Take care,
Mike
