Default Social security number following visa approval

Hi, Happy New Year to you all!

I will be applying for my Social Security number via the DS-230 Part II at my CR-1 visa interview in London later this month. How long after approval does it take (roughly) to get your SSN?

I potentially have a job pending my visa approval, and it would be useful to know how soon I could start work.

Cheers

My husband came here on a K1 non immigrant visa . He waited two weeks to apply after he arrived here and we got his SS Card in 8 days. Not sure if it's the same for CR-1 but he got his pretty quickly.

You can start work on the day you enter the USA using your CR-1 visa.

It takes about a month for your SS card to show up in the mail after you arrive on the CR-1 visa, but your employer does not NEED to see that card in order to hire you. If they insist, then you can wait about 10 days after your arrival, and then go to the SSA office to get a letter verifying you've applied for the card. Your employer should accept this letter as verification that you've applied for your SSN.

It's not the same for a CR-1. A CR-1 applicant can apply ahead of time for their SSN and it will come to them automatically in the mail after their arrival in the USA using the CR-1 visa. Takes about a month or so to arrive in the mail.

You are employment authorized as soon as you are admitted, so you are good to start work then.
Since you'll have applied for the SSN via your arrival papers, it's simply a paperwork exercise on how you get paid. Let me know if you need the employer resources for that--they've been posted before.

You can start work immediately. You may have an argument with the morons in HR or payroll, but you can DEFINITELY start work immediately.

Well there should be plenty of opportunity for advancement. You should be a VP within the year.

I entered on the 14th December (CR1), and had my Social security card in my hand on the 22nd....... very fast!

My boys (CR2's) have yet to make an appearance though, so I'm going leave it another couple of weeks before I go down to chase them up.

We applied for them all on the DS230 (II) also.

Still can't remember the damn number on mine though, no matter how many times I try!
