Default Social Security Number

Hi

We have been told that we can start the process of applying for a social security number whilst still in the UK (due to arrive in US early January), but the info we have been given (see link http://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/) seems to be for immigrant visa holders - my husband has an O1 visa, which i believe is a non-immigrant visa..... so can we still use the procedure for immigrant visas?

If so, I assume we'd have to use the DS260 form, and take this to the embassy with us when we have our interview (in December), is that correct? When I click on the DS-260 form it then refers to NVC case number and invoice, but when i click on the NVC, it really doesn't seem relevant to us (I dont think).

Husbands new employer has said they cant pay him, or even get him set up on the corporate computer systems, until he has his SSN, so we are keen to do this while still in the UK if at all possible.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Whoever told you that is incorrect.

No.

This is not true. The employer CAN pay him without a SSN. Your husband will apply for his SSN about 10 days after his arrival in the USA, and if he's in the system, he'll have the number the next day. He'll receive the SS card in the mail a couple of weeks later.

It is quite possible that it is difficult if not impossible to put someone's name into the company payroll system, but that is not the same as them not being able (legal) to pay them. I don't know how your husband's new employer is going handle this, but he is not going to have his SSN until a week or so after he arrives in the country.
