Unfortunately not - non USCs have to go in person.

This. I took my passport with the I-551 (temporary GC) and it wasn't a problem. This was with Wells Fargo.

So it's sounds like it hasn't been processed. I'm back in the UK temporarily (flying back out to US on 22nd May) and the lack of SSN is stopping me opening bank accounts in US and even applying for Health Insurance.

Any tips on how to do things like this without a SSN (but WITH a Green Card)?

Thanks all (in advance)

You don't need a SSN number to open a normal bank account, nor get medical insurance.

You probably will have to ask to speak to a supervisor.

They can use your passport number, but if their systems aren't set up for anything but a SSN, they can use johnny foreigner default - 000-00-0004 which is the number they are supposed to use for any foreigner who doesn't currently have a valid number of their own, and then they switch it for your real number when you get it.
