Social Security number
I have a Visa interview on MArch 7th and we relo to Delaware on 1st April through immigrant spouse VISA.
Does anyone know how long it takes for the social security no to come through after the VISA is approved - are we talking days, weeks , months?

What kind of visa interview? Immediate Relative? K-3? Where is the interview? The US? Or a US Consulate aboard?
Your visa approval doesn't net you a social security no. (note the period after the o). You have to apply for it. If you name and status is on the SAVE system you will have a social security card in your mailbox in 10 days. If it is not, you might have a social security card in your mailbox in 10 weeks.

On our Immigrant forms we requested a ss no. but nothing would have been done about it had we not gone to the office.

PS: Our SS applications were witheld and only submitted 1 day apart so as not to get consective numbers in the same family.
We have still not recieved my daughters card. She is only 2, does this have any bearing. Mine and my wifes cards came 1 day apart about 4 days after visiting the office.

Why is this? The SSA web site states that the process is automatic and that
the social security card will be mailed to you within three weeks. Was there
something specific to your case that made this not true, or is the

I am just guessing here, revealing our experience in Feb 05.
We had marked yes on our immigration forms but just went to the Social Security office as the seamingly standard procedure after 10 days of arriving. Our immigrant details were on the save system but there was no record of an application fo social security. Needles to say that after we handed in our applications we got our cards within 4 days.

We had marked yes on our immigration forms but just went to the Social Security office as the seamingly standard procedure after 10 days of arriving. Our immigrant details were on the save system but there was no record of an application fo social security. Needles to say that after we handed in our applications we got our cards within 4 days.

Thanks for the info. I know someone who just got his immigrant visa last
week, but he won't be coming to the US for a few weeks, since he has some
things to tie up back home first. He had been assured when he went to get
his visa that the SS card would be mailed within three weeks of his entry to
the US. I will let him know that it may or may not happen that easily.

Reports from patient people show that the cards are consistantly arriving within 4 weeks. If one goes into SS early, they trigger the manual application procedure. Same net result, just add in a trip or two to SS for those who 'just can't wait'.
