Question So who is allowed to ask these things?

Ok - so once in country with green card, which kinds of personnel are allowed (or not) to ask about the following:

Immigration status
Authorisation to work
Ask for your SSN

I think I've seen on the forum that the fuzz aren't allowed to ask about your immigration status. Is that correct? What about the other stuff.

Your immigration status, or lack thereof, is a matter of federal jurisdiction and law. By and large most law enforcement agencies in the US are state entities enforcing state and city laws and regulations, ergo, there really isn't a need for a local cop to ask about a green card.

In some places, this has been codified into regulations or practice--cops will not ask about immigration status so immigrants, legal or illegal, will feel they can call the police (or fire department or dog catcher) when needed and not fear getting deported. In some areas, this is changing (for example, Prince William County, VA) and local law enforcement is turning over illegals to the feds for immigration hearings (search the Washington Post for more on this--it's a long story, example here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...103104076.html).

Other than that, employers are entitled (required) to ask about status as our some universities (if the student is coming on say an F1 or something).

An employer would have to ask for work authorisation and SSN (SSN needed to pay taxes).

In some states, yes the police (fuzz is a long dead term for the police as is pig) can ask.

An employees need to ask as long as your social security card carries the legend authorized to work with USCIS authorization.

If the word fuzz is long dead in this context how do you explain the film "Hot Fuzz"?

Your first line is wrong - "fuzz" is very much a current term.

Your second statement appears to either be written whilst drunk, or via random selection of vaguely associated words.

Well you guys are younger than me and if you all like the word fuzz then by all means fuzz away my friends.

Nah I'm a teetotaler. Never touch the stuff. To little coffee:

Amend the following sentence to read:

An Employer needs to .....

To little coffe? Or is that "Too little coffee"

In any case, it appears you have not had enough coffee

(unless you were planning to write a poem dedicated to coffee)

MANY places will ask for your SSN; you have to decide who gets the keys to the kingdom and who does not.
You are not required to give your SSN as an identifier to every business that requests it, but they are also not under any obligation to serve you. Suggest nailing down a diplomatic answer for this inevitable question. Most people don't give it a lot of thought, so when you refuse to supply the SSN, be prepared for some blow back.

Surely if I'm not asking for credit, then a business asking me for it doesn't need it? Is that a fair assessment?

Nope. I've had to supply SSN to electric company, cable company, trash company, insurance company, & the list goes on. They use your SSN to look at your credit history - if you don't have one or have a bad history, they can require you to put down a deposit for their services.

EDIT: Forgot to mention cell phone companies too, if you are going to set up a contract with them.
