Car completely frozen this morning - couldn't start it, could barely turn the steering wheel and the accelerator stuck.
Had to get a taxi to the train station

Please enlighten an ignorant Yank- How cold does it get in England? I'm thinking of the guy in the introduction forum that moved to Nebraska (I think) and said it was colder than anything he'd experienced in England. I guess it depends where you are in England, some parts are probably warmer than others. I imagined winter in England was similar to a midwestern/northeastern winter here and summer doesn't get much over 80f.

I would compare it to North Carolina in winter, without the sunshine.

It's certainly not as cold, dry or sunny as NJ in winter...the daylight hours are shorter in the UK. It's not as hot, humid and sunny as NJ is in summer...the daylight hours are longer in the UK.

I remember doing a journey in fog in the UK like that I couldn't see the end of my bonnet.
Glad you got back safe.

Gets colder up north, but down south, it's pretty mild, generally say between 37-65F in winter and 75-86F in the summer, with usually a cool breeze, doesn't usually get as humid as it often does around here.

There's a few days of just under 0C, so around 28-30F, but they don't tend to linger.

You can read all about the British climate here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_climate

However - there definitely seems to be a climate change due to global warming - the Summertime weather has generally been hot and dry (with droughts) in the past couple of years or so. I was in England in mid-November last year and it was very warm and mild; there were even geraniums in bloom.

It's weird to think that in New York and the metro area had temps in the 70s F just a couple of weeks ago....

I had a journey like that once in the UK on the M56...heavy snow and freezing fog. Couldn't see the cat's eyes, barrier, lane markings....nothing...it was terrifying.

Freezing fog-oh yes I remember it well when living in Germany!!! :frown:

Sounds like parts of the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. My FIL is from a small town on the northern coast there (Sequim) and the weather is just as you describe. The summers there are wonderful.

I remember when I was living in Osnabruck,Germany,I'd popped across to the next block of flats to see a friend of mine, when I went to pop back home it had been raining....it was freezing rain, even the grass was slippery!...scared the hell out of me!......first time I'd ever even heard of freezing rain, let alone experienced it!...never heard of it again until I came to live in Illinois!........It just started snowing here about two hours ago, already got about two inches on the ground, the roads are covered, they say we should get anywhere between 2-8 inches by the end of the day,our outside thermometer says it's
0F..........I don't intend going anywhere until monday!.........good luck to the rest of you guys.........stay safe!.........Sophia

Thanks!:)

Well, the county that I was in at the time has been declared a state of emergency! (as well as the county I work in). As of this morning they had already had 8FT of the fluffy white stuff and there is more to come. The plows no longer have anywhere to plow the snow to there's so much of it. We are getting it pretty bad where we live too but not as bad as that. We even made it onto the Charlie Gibson news show last night!
It was bin day yesterday in my neighbourhood. Apparently it got pretty windy during the day because when I got home my bin was in my neighbours front garden across the street. I had to wade through knee deep snow to retrieve it (I almost thought about saying "bugger it!" and just buying a new one rather than trying to rescue it! .)
It hasn't stopped snowing this afternoon either so it just keeps on coming.

It was no where near this bad last year, it's insane.

Rushman, are you completely buried?
