Smoking in the USA
 

OK so you may notice from my signature that I finally after 1,000,000 attempts have stopped smoking a little over 3 months ago and still going strong, no urge to smoke at all.

I had been smoking for about 9 years with varying degrees, from a pack a day to 2 packs a week depending on my surroundings etc.

So my question is this anyone else quit after comming over here, do you think it is harder to quit over here for any particular reason? What methods did you use?

I used quitnet web site, went tee total for the first month and Allan Carr books.

Please share your experiences.

I used to like to have a puff but never a big smoker when I first moved here I was stressed with all the paperwork etc.Anyways I think its harder here as most people that I have met seem to still smoke plus it is so much cheaper here in the US.
I hate smoke in the house or car and now that I have given up.I smell it on my work colleges when they come back from break and it stinks, thats when I think to myself crap I used to stink like that also.

But I confess a few drinks and I might just mouch a ciggie lol.

I gave up two years ago. Personally I found it easier to give up here as opposed to the UK as I wasn't around my family, (a few of whom smoke), and I don't socialise hardly at all here so I didn't have the added pressures of being around smokers in a social environment.

I used patches, but they aren't for everyone, my sister has tried twice to quit with patches and they didn't work for her.

Keep it up. It will get easier with each day. I found it quite hard around the 3 month mark but once I got past that I was fine.

Yes I smoke, bloody disgusting habit I know :o Will try my best to give up in the new year because I'm not paying them prices back home :eek: Hub's gave up last February.

Make Wednesday your first day to quit...it's harder for your husband when he's around people that are smoking.

Dependant on the laws in your state, it may well be easier to quit here. If you can only smoke outside of bars, etc chances are it'll be easier to stop for the convenience factor.

My wife and I both quit (just flat out stopped, no patches, gum or anything)when she got pregnant. She quit because she had to, I quit for support. That was a year ago not smoked since, the urge not really returning because its pretty much been outlawed down here since 2003 in most public places (and also probably because we don't go out partying so much these days either).

A big factor in staying stopped is circumstances, peer group etc, if you can not smoke in those circumstances you've pretty much got it cracked.

I know :o I smoke out on the porch anyway, will cut right down with him home, lots of gum and perfume at the ready.

Smoked 1 1/2 - 2 packs a day until about 7 - 8 years ago, quit because I started playing football again. After 5 years I had one or two every now and then at a party etc, without inhaling.
Smoke a pipe now and again and started smoking more when my Dad got sick a few months ago ( still do not inhale).................. Pretty complicated this smoking business

That reminds me...when I first met my husband he used to smoke. When we got married he would stand outside the back door for a quick smoke. I once threw a bucket of water over him from the bathroom window above. :D The following New Year's Eve he said from midnight he would never smoke again...and he hasn't.

Go the whole hog Vic and pack it in......now!

Or ask your husband to throw buckets of water over you when he sees you smoking! :p

He will not push me as I did not him, it is something I will do when I get me head in gear.

In New York City Mayor Bloomberg has put a $3 tax on them and they were approx. $7.50 a pack, apparently people can buy them in Virginia and transport them in for aroung $2.50 a pack. Here in LA they are about $4.50

$3 a pack here, but I buy a carton from base $21.

We pay $14 a carton ... not exactly top brands though

I was shocked at the price in NYC that must be near UK prices???
