Skip between US and Caribbean island

Is it OK to spend 90 days in the US and then go to one of the Caribbean islands for 90 days and then return to the US

My mother tried this and was refused entry to the US, sent back to the bahamas and then deported from there back to the UK.
Going to the carribbrean does not reset the VWP

OK thanks for that I knew it did not reset the vwp if it was still valid, but if I had stayed in the us for 90 days and left on the 90th day it would have ran out anyway, thats why I was asking but thanks what a shame.

Yes, but don't make a habit of it or else you will raise suspicions at the border.

Really? I think for non-US citizens, you'll find your answer is incorrect.
Departing the US for Mexico, Canada and adjacent islands does not reset the VWP clock for a new 90 day stay.
