My husband is Scottish and barely sounds as if he's British. In fact when we lived in the UK he was constantly asked if he was Canadian!

And when are Americans going to stop asking me if I'm Australian??? I'm a Northerner for crying out loud. I mean, an English guy from Romford came over here a while back, and asked me the same bloody thing...

Never.

Unless you start being really correct with your grammar, then they'll accuse you of being German/Swedish/Norwegian.....

I don't understand it ...they all watch Frasier, how come they don't realise you can be English and speak with flat vowels?

It doesn't just happen to northeners - I'm as south as they come and also get asked if I'm Australian. They must think you're Australian if you don't speak like the Queen, basically.

Hola!

Hmm actually Patrick, it might just help you get a job! I have been job-hunting for the past month (so far unsuccessfully) but many of the jobs I haven't been able to apply for, require a Spanish speaker. Methinks I should learn it!

Where in the north are you from?
I would say I am at a 50/50 spilt on being asked if I am Austrailian or if I am south african

Occasionally, people hit the nail on the head, mostly women, by saying "Your accent is so cute." Makes for a good day's work

Most, however, either say "Are you from London or England?", or cannot make up their mind whether I'm Irish, Scottish, Austrailian, and maybe English last of all. My northern English accent makes it tough for some people to pin, the only accents people here experience are Hugh Grant, and Eliza Doolittle.
